Every one of those sites I've seen has made unrealistic claims. There is the implication that you can power yoru entire house for just a few hundred dollars. Simply put, if it were so easy or cheap, you would see people doing it. Here is a critique of one such site: nlcpr.com/ Deceptions6.php It is possible to build your own solar water heater, but you would not need to pay for instructions. Just look at YouTube or do a general internet search on "solar water heater ".

You can build a "system " for $200 but it will still require solar cells which are NOT available at the local hardware store. And it will be so small it won't be much use. Maybe enough to power one light. Definitely not enough for a refrigerator or air conditioner.
